Welcome to Bilbao!

Bilbao, located in northern Spain, is the largest city in the province of Biscay and the Basque Country. It is known for successfully blending traditional Basque culture with a modern vision for the future, making it a must-visit for design and culture enthusiasts. The city is surrounded by green hills and is close to the coast.

Bilbao has a strong devotion to gastronomy, with a tradition of celebrating any occasion around good food and drink. There are three main areas for “poteo” (bar hopping) and “pintxos” (Basque tapas): Casco Viejo, Indautxu (García Rivero or Licenciado Pozas streets), and Ensanche (Ledesma or Diputación streets). Each bar offers a unique style, and attendees are encouraged to explore them. Bilbao is a relatively small city and can easily be explored on foot, without the need for public transport.

University of the Basque Country (EHU)

The University of the Basque Country, officially known as Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (EHU), stands as the most important higher education institution in the Basque Country. As a public university with deep roots in Basque culture, it has trained over 300 000 graduates across all areas of knowledge and is responsible for \(70\%\) of the research carried out in the region. The UPV/EHU is characterized by its distributed structure, spanning three main campuses — Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Araba — each corresponding to one of the three Basque provinces. This enables it to offer a wide array of over 70 degrees and 150 graduate programs, with teaching conducted in Basque, Spanish, and an increasing number of courses in English, reflecting its commitment to internationalization.

The Faculty of Science and Technology is one of the largest centers within the EHU, located on the main Campus of Biscay in Leioa, just 14 km from Bilbao. It is a vibrant hub for scientific and technological education and research, offering a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics, along with a double degree in Electronic Engineering and Physics. Within this esteemed faculty, the Department of Mathematics plays a crucial role. It encompasses teaching and research across all areas of mathematics, from pure mathematics to applied mathematics, statistics, and operational research. The department is actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate studies, contributing significantly to the academic and research landscape of the university and beyond.

Conference Venue

The conference will be held at the Bizkaia Aretoa (Figure 1), part of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. This L-shaped building is situated in an emblematic area of Bilbao, offering views of the estuary and the Guggenheim Museum, right in the heart of Avenida de Abandoibarra.

The Bizkaia Aretoa spans over 9 000 square meters across six floors. The ground floor, covering 2 300 square meters, houses the Mitxelena Auditorium (Figure 2), which can accommodate 441 people. It also includes a large 400 square meter hall, two meeting rooms, and a spacious shop. The first, second, and third floors each have over 1 000 square meters of space, featuring two additional auditoriums for 161 and 66 people, five open spaces for exhibitions, and offices for various EHU services.

Oral presentations will be held in the Mitxelena Auditorium.
