General Information

Traveling to Bilbao

Bilbao is the most well-connected city in northern Spain.

By plane

Bilbao Airport (IATA: BIO) is the most important airport in the region, offering direct flights to major cities in Spain and many European destinations, as well as a direct flight to New York (EWR). The airport is only 15 km from Bilbao city center, a 10-minute car ride. A bus service runs every 30 minutes from the city center, and taxis from the airport to downtown Bilbao cost approximately‚ 25 - 30 euros.

Airlines flying from Bilbao Airport include:

  • Major Carriers: Lufthansa, Air France, Iberia, Air Europa, British Airways, KLM, TAP Portugal, Swiss, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Aer Lingus.

  • Low-Cost Carriers: Vueling, Volotea, easyJet, Eurowings, Wizz Air, Ryanair (from Santander).

Bilbao Airport has direct flights to over 60 destinations in 20 countries. Some popular direct flight destinations from Europe include: Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Bristol, Brussels, Copenhagen, Cork, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hamburg, Istanbul, Lisbon, London (Gatwick, Heathrow), Manchester, Milan, Munich, Naples, Oslo, Paris (Charles de Gaulle, Orly), Porto, Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Venice, Vienna, and Zurich.

Direct flights from Spain include: Alicante, Barcelona, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Granada, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Menorca, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife, and Valencia.

Santander Airport (SDR), located about 90 km away, is another viable option, particularly for Ryanair flights. While there are currently no direct flights from Santander to Bilbao, there are good bus connections available.

Other types of connections

Thanks to its strategic location, Bilbao enjoys strong transport links by rail and motorway with major cities throughout Spain and Europe. In addition, its port provides maritime connections with the United Kingdom.
